December 17: Joy in Him

Matt Law, Associate Student Director

”But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.”

Psalm 5:11, NIV

When I was younger, I remember being told, “Do something that will make you happy.” Choose a career or activity, or even marry someone who will make you happy. But when it comes down to it, happiness comes, and it goes. It doesn’t stay in hard circumstances.

Happiness is defined as a state of contentment. Happiness only comes from positive life experiences, such as achieving goals, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying time doing your favorite activity. Happiness depends on what happens.

But joy depends on Jesus. Joy, as defined in the Bible, is choosing to respond to external circumstances with inner contentment and satisfaction because we know that God will use these experiences to accomplish His work in and through our lives.

When we take refuge in God, the Lord will provide protection in those circumstances that are difficult to be happy in, and we are still able to rejoice and be glad in those circumstances, for the Joy in the Lord is our strength.

David calls on those who love the Lord’s name to exult in Him. The Lord’s name represents God’s character and reputation, and knowing that God is holy, gracious, merciful, and faithful should lead people to rejoice in Him.

Scripture tells us to choose joy in the midst of our circumstances by spending time in God’s presence. His Word tells us to take refuge in Him. This can include reading the Bible and reminding oneself of God’s goodness. The Lord will always surround us so we can experience true joy.

The Joy of the Lord is our strength!
