December 4: Hope in the Shadows

“The Lord is my portion, ' says my soul; therefore, I will have hope in him.”
Lamentations 3:24
The Stockdale Paradox teaches us to balance unwavering hope with a willingness to face hard truths. Named after Admiral James Stockdale, a Vietnam POW, it emphasizes believing you will ultimately prevail while confronting the brutal realities of your current situation.
As Christians, this aligns with our hope in Jesus. We trust in His ultimate victory over sin and death, even when life feels overwhelming. Just as Stockdale’s faith in his survival sustained him, our faith in Christ’s promises gives us strength to endure challenges, knowing He is our ultimate source of hope and deliverance.
The Lord is my portion; He is more than enough. The hope we have in Christ transforms even the most challenging battles, reminding us that our future in Him makes every trial more endurable. Having hope does not change our circumstances or make our pain magically disappear; rather, the hope of the gospel satisfies and sustains us.
Father, continue to teach me what it means to put my hope in you. Remind me of your promises and your faithfulness. You are more than enough for me, Jesus! Thank you. Amen.
