The Essential Oil of the Holy Spirit

By Ginny Chambers

It seems like you can’t go anywhere these days and not hear about essential oils. They are often used in personal care products, cleaning products and for aromatherapy. Some essential oils are said to be calming and can help ease pain while others are said to help with energy and focus.

In biblical times, anointing someone’s body or head with oil was a common practice. It was sometimes used to show respect to visitors, to consecrate or install a new priest or king, and to comfort and heal the sick.

In the spiritual realm, God has given us anointing oil, so to speak, from heaven through His Holy Spirit. In 1 John 2:27, John writes:

“And as for you, the anointing which you received from Him remains in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you remain in Him.”

The Holy Spirit is our teacher and a counselor, and He is here to show us how to live. The Bible also says that God gave us the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead. Paul writes in Romans 8:11:

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

That is something to shout about! His Spirit also gives us wisdom and understanding in all things pertaining to life and godliness. 2 Peter 1:3 says:

“For His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”

The Holy Spirit’s anointing is the essential oil in our lives. If your heart is tired and your witness is wavering, ask and keep on asking. Seek and you will find. Knock and it shall be given to you. Let Him reveal to you His plan and find comfort and rest in the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
