Living a Life of Meaning
(3rd of a Seven-Part Study of Ecclesiastes)
Solomon had everything most people dream of—riches, wisdom, fame, and power. Yet, as he reflected on his life, he realized that without God, all his accomplishments were like “chasing after the wind.” He describes his pursuit of happiness as "smoke and mirrors." In essence, life without God, or "life under the sun," left him feeling unfulfilled, no matter what he achieved.
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon gives us one reality check after another, pointing out the futility of life without a connection to our Creator. He tells us he tried it all: wealth, pleasure, knowledge—but none of it gave him lasting satisfaction.
Where Can We Find True Satisfaction?
In Ecclesiastes 1:8, Solomon shines a light on human nature. He observes how easily we grow bored with life. Even when we experience beautiful things, we always want more. He says, "The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing." Whether it’s the excitement of travel, hearing a new song, or seeing a breathtaking sight, the thrill eventually fades.
What once seemed exciting, like your first car or the first time you saw something amazing, eventually loses its spark. We keep searching for new experiences, thinking they will satisfy us, but Solomon reminds us that apart from God, nothing will ever fully satisfy our hearts.
How Will We Be Remembered?
Solomon also teaches that there is "nothing new under the sun." We often think we’ve discovered something novel, but in reality, human nature has remained the same throughout history. Technologies change, but the core struggles—boredom, restlessness, and the search for meaning—are still with us.
One of the deepest longings of the human heart is the desire to leave a lasting legacy, to be remembered after we’re gone. But Solomon reminds us that generations come and go, and eventually, most of us will be forgotten. We might think our achievements will make us unforgettable, but in the grand scheme of history, most of us will fade into obscurity.
Is Life Really Meaningless?
Here’s the good news: with God, life is not meaningless. In fact, everything gains purpose. While our names may be forgotten by the world, God never forgets us. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we are promised eternal life and a place in God's kingdom. Isaiah 49:16 says, "I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands," reminding us that God remembers us forever. In Christ, we are given new life, new purpose, and the assurance that we will never be forgotten.
How Can We Find Meaning in Life?
In the end, Solomon’s journey teaches us that the only way to find true meaning is through a relationship with God. No matter how much we achieve or experience, it will all feel empty without Him. But with God, life is infused with wonder, love, and purpose. So, if you’re feeling restless, remember that only God can fill that void and give your life eternal meaning.
Consider this prayer: Lord, thank You for reminding us that life with You is filled with purpose and meaning. Help us not to chase after fleeting things but to seek You, the source of true fulfillment. Amen.
