3 Parenting Tools from the Bible

by Erin Pickering

(Second of a four-part series on Living Relationally)

Parenting is both a profound blessing and an immense responsibility. We all know that, and even those of us without kids see the blessing, the work, and the responsibility it takes to raise them. In the latest sermon from the "Living Relationally" series, Pastor Jeff shared practical, biblically grounded principles from Luke 2:39-52 for parenting, emphasizing the need for unwavering commitment to God, intentional faith transmission, and providing space for children to develop their own relationship with the Lord.

1. Live a Life Committed to the Lord

By consistently demonstrating spiritual fervor and dedication, as Mary and Joseph did, parents can instill lasting values in their children. Regular church attendance by both parents significantly influences their children’s faithfulness, emphasizing that actions and commitments speak volumes to kids. By integrating prayer, worship, and scriptural teaching into everyday family life, parents can model a faith-filled lifestyle that children will carry into adulthood.

Challenge: Reflect on your daily routines and commitments. Are you living a life that visibly prioritizes your faith? Take a step this week to intentionally incorporate prayer and worship into your family's daily activities.

2. Pass on a Legacy of Faith

The Shema prayer from Deuteronomy underscores the parental responsibility to teach and impress God’s commands upon your children. By taking an active role in their spiritual development through prayer, worship, and Bible study, parents can ensure that their faith is transferred from one generation to the next.

Challenge: Find new ways to integrate faith discussions into your daily interactions with your children. Whether it’s a devotional at dinner or a prayer before school, commit to making faith a central part of your family’s life.

3. Allow Space for Spiritual Growth

Luke 2:39-52 is the story of young Jesus staying behind in the temple, showing a natural progression towards independence in faith. Parents should support and nurture this journey, recognizing that their child's relationship with God is paramount. Additionally, parents are encouraged to mark and cherish significant moments with their children, creating lasting memories and fostering a deep, enduring bond. By being present and engaged, parents can turn everyday moments into treasured memories that resonate throughout their children’s lives.

Challenge: Give your children opportunities to explore their faith independently. Support their spiritual curiosity and be there to guide them when needed. Make it a point to celebrate and cherish significant milestones in their faith journey.

Pastor Jeff's message is an incredible reminder that parenting is a spiritual journey that shapes both parents and children. By living a life of staunch commitment, passing on a legacy of faith, allowing space for spiritual growth, and marking meaningful moments, parents can navigate the complexities of raising children with grace and wisdom. Through these principles, Pastor Jeff encourages parents to create a nurturing, faith-filled environment that reflects God's love and guidance. Watch Pastor Jeff’s full message below!
