Embracing the Grandparenting Journey

by Erin Pickering

(Third of a four-part series on Living Relationally)

The Impact of My Grandparents

Growing up, my grandparents were a steadfast presence in my life. Their unwavering support and love shaped me in ways I can't fully express. They were there for every milestone, every joy, and every challenge, offering wisdom and guidance that only comes from a life well-lived. Their faith in Jesus was a cornerstone of their lives, and they imparted that same faith to me through their actions and words.

Even now, as I walk my own journey with Jesus, I often find myself longing for their counsel. Their faith was a guiding light, and I wish I could sit with them and share the ways in which my relationship with Jesus has deepened. I miss their stories, their prayers, and the comfort of their presence.

In his sermon on “Living Relationally as a Grandparent,” Pastor Jeff and his wife, Darlene, spoke wisdom into the joys and responsibilities of grandparenting, rooted in biblical teachings. Drawing from Psalm 71:17-18, Pastor Jeff and Darlene emphasized the enduring impact grandparents can have on their grandchildren's spiritual lives. It’s not just about enjoying the golden years but also about actively leaving a legacy of faith. The key takeaway? Before passing on, make sure you pass it on.

Passing on a Legacy of Faith

Grandparents can still produce fruit even in their later years. By imparting biblical values and sharing life lessons, grandparents ensure their faith lives on in future generations. Judges 2:10 shows a generation that grew up without acknowledging the Lord due to the previous generation's failure to pass on their faith. Grandparents must be intentional in teaching and declaring God's deeds to their grandchildren. The biblical values of our children and grandchildren tomorrow depend on what we put in their hearts today.

Challenge: Grandparents, reflect on the legacy you're leaving. Are you actively sharing your faith and experiences with your grandchildren? Consider how you can intentionally impart spiritual values and stories through your interactions.

Embracing Extended Ministry

Grandparenting is an opportunity for extended ministry. Isaiah 46:4 reassures that God cares for His followers throughout their lifetime, encouraging grandparents to embrace their role in extended ministry. Grandparents should actively engage with their grandchildren to teach them about God's deeds and strength. There’s a big need for grandparents to declare God's works to the next generation, ensuring their faith journey continues to inspire and guide.

Challenge: Embrace your role in extended ministry. Seek opportunities to mentor and guide your grandchildren, sharing the wondrous deeds of God with them. Your wisdom and experience are invaluable in nurturing their faith and resilience.

Grandparents, you have a unique role in shaping the spiritual lives of your grandchildren. By passing on a legacy of faith, teaching and declaring God's deeds, and embracing their extended ministry, you can leave an indelible mark on your families. Watch Pastor Jeff’s full message below!
