4 Simple Steps to Talk to Your Child About Salvation

by Tabitha Turner, Lowco Kids Director

Christian parents often look forward to the special moment when their child prays to accept Christ as their Savior. It’s a beautiful time of joy and celebration, marking the beginning of a child’s spiritual journey. But as parents, we may wonder: Does my child truly understand this decision? How can I help them grow closer to Christ and deepen their faith? They’re so young—are they ready for such a big step? How can I guide and nurture them through this important season?

Research from Barna.com shows that a child’s worldview starts to form as early as 18 months and is largely shaped by age 13. These early years are a precious window for teaching them about God’s love and helping them build a strong foundation that will carry them through life.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it” (NIV). This verse speaks directly to the heart of parenting: planting seeds of faith early and trusting that God will nurture and grow them in His perfect timing. As parents, we have the incredible privilege of nurturing these seeds with love, patience, and prayer.

4 Simple Steps to Talk to Your Child About Salvation

Begin by celebrating your child’s decision. Let them know how proud you are of the choice they’ve made to become part of God’s family. This is a perfect moment to share a piece of your own faith journey—age-appropriate, of course. Tell them how you came to know Jesus and how your life has changed because of Him. Hearing your story makes their faith feel personal and relatable.

  1. Share Jesus' Love

Tell your child that Jesus loves them and that He died to forgive their sins. If they believe in Him, they become part of God’s family.

  2. Explain What It Means to Follow Jesus

Teach your child that accepting Jesus means asking for forgiveness for their sins and choosing to follow Him. Assure them that Jesus will always love and help them.

  3. Pray Together

Lead your child in a heartfelt prayer to accept Jesus, such as:
“Jesus, I believe in You. Please forgive me for my sins. Please come into my heart and help me follow You.”

  4. Celebrate Their Faith.

Rejoice together after their prayer! Celebrate their decision, reminding them they are now part of God’s family and that Jesus will always be with them. By celebrating their decision, answering their questions, and living out your faith in everyday life, you’re helping your child build a strong foundation in Christ. Remember, this is just the beginning of their journey. As you guide them with love and patience, trust that God will continue to work in their hearts.
