Trusting God’s Timing: A Lesson from Luke 2
Have you ever caught yourself trying to schedule God as if He operates on our timetable? "God, I really need this to happen by that day!" we plead as if we are the ones in control. Yet, time and again, Scripture reminds us that God’s timing is always perfect, even when it doesn’t align with our expectations.
Take Luke 2:1-20 for example. No one could have predicted that the Savior of the world would be born in a stable, in the most inconvenient of circumstances. But through it all, God was orchestrating His divine plan.
When People Make Life Difficult
Life gets complicated, often because of people. Whether through conflict, selfishness, or decisions beyond our control, others can make our path harder than it needs to be.
In Luke 2:1-3, we see Caesar Augustus, a ruler obsessed with power, issuing a decree that forced Mary and Joseph to travel 80 miles to Bethlehem—a grueling journey made even harder by Mary’s advanced pregnancy.
Caesar didn’t care about their struggles. His decree was about control, power, and taxation. Yet, Mary and Joseph submitted without complaint, trusting that God had a greater plan, even when it made no sense.
When Life is Just Hard
Sometimes, life is simply difficult. Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem only to find no room, no comfort, just a stable and a feeding trough for their newborn.
Joseph could have responded with anger or frustration—“God, we’re bringing Your Son into the world, and this is how You let us be treated?” But instead, he pressed on.
Like them, we all face seasons of hardship. Our plans fail, people disappoint us, and doors close. But God is still in control, working even in the struggles.
When God’s Good News Breaks Through
In the middle of hardship, something miraculous happened. In Luke 2:8-20, God delivered the most glorious message to humble shepherds—not to kings, not to priests, but to ordinary, overlooked people.
An angel proclaimed, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy… a Savior has been born!” (Luke 2:10-11). The shepherds didn’t hesitate—they ran to see Jesus and spread the news. They became the first evangelists of the Christian age.
Finding Peace in God’s Plan
Your life is not defined by what is thrown at you. It’s defined by who is enthroned in you.
Mary and Joseph’s journey reminds us that life’s hardships don’t mean God isn’t working. Even in difficulty, God’s plan is unfolding perfectly.
So the next time you find yourself saying, “If I can just make it to ___,” stop and remember: You don’t have to just get through. God is already working it out. Trust Him, and let His peace guide you through the journey.
