Beyond the Bunny
by Tabitha Turner, Lowco Kids Director
Recently, a friend and co-worker asked if I’d be interested in writing an Easter blog. She thought it could be a helpful resource for parents—something to guide them in sharing Easter's true meaning and significance with their kids. She laughed and tossed out the title “Beyond the Bunny.” We both agreed it was clever, but the more I sat with it, the more I realized how timely and meaningful that phrase really is.
As I write this, we’ve just wrapped up our annual Easter Egg Hunt—complete with candy-filled eggs, crafts, games, and, yes, even a visit from the Easter Bunny. It was a joyful day, and we were thankful for the chance to welcome families from our community and invite them to our Easter services. But now that the eggs have been found and the bunny has gone home, what’s next? How do we keep the conversation going and help our children understand what Easter is truly about?
A recent study by Barna found that even though 67% of Americans say Easter is a religious holiday, only 42% know it’s really about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That tells us something important—many people don’t know the full story. As a parent, you have a special opportunity to help your kids learn what Easter is truly about and why it matters.
How Can I Talk to My Kids About the Real Meaning of Easter?
Keep It Simple: Share the Love of Jesus
Start by focusing on how much Jesus loves us and why He made the ultimate sacrifice. Keeping it clear and simple helps your kids understand the heart of the message.
Create Meaningful Traditions
You can help your kids understand Easter by reading the story from one of the four Gospels, baking resurrection rolls together, or even doing a family devotional. These simple activities bring the Easter story to life in a way that’s fun and meaningful for them.
Use Different Media
For younger kids, watching a fun movie or reading a storybook can help start the conversation. You might watch Twas the Night Before Easter from Veggie Tales to make the story more exciting. You can also read He Is Risen: Rocks Tell the Story of Easter by Patti Rokus, a book that helps kids understand the resurrection. For more insight into Easter, check out the video The Meaning of Easter | What's in the Bible by Phil Vischer—it’s a great way to help kids grasp the true meaning of the holiday.
Lead by Example: Live Out the Message
The best way to teach your kids about Easter is by living out its message yourself. Let them see you celebrating the resurrection, talking about it, and reflecting on God’s love and grace. Kids learn so much by watching us, so when we make Easter a priority, they see just how important it is.
