Job, Suffering, and Satan

SUMMARY

Why does God allow His people to suffer?

Each character in Job’s story provides partial insights, but only God reveals the full truth. Suffering originates from Satan, who seeks to destroy faith by leading people to doubt God's love. Job's wife and friends offered flawed responses to suffering, believing it was a reason to give up on life or a punishment for sin. Job himself questioned "why" but ultimately demonstrated faith in God, even without clear answers.

God allowed Satan to test Job, but He set limits on how far Satan could go. God is always in control, even when suffering strikes. While Job’s wife and friends misunderstood suffering, blaming it on sin or encouraging despair, Job held fast to his faith. Even when belief in God is hard, there is no better place to turn.

Ultimately, God’s response to Job’s suffering was not to explain the "why" but to remind Job of His presence and sovereignty. Job learned to trust in God’s character rather than seeking all the answers. Believers, lean into God's love, wisdom, and presence during times of suffering, trusting that He is enough even when life's challenges seem incomprehensible.
