Bread Of Life

Only Jesus truly satisfies your desire for meaning and purpose. He is the one worth living for.

KEY VERSES

John 6:22-35 (NASB)

22 The next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23 There came other small boats from Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 “Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.” 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” 30 So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? 31 “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

UNDERSTANDING

  • What are some things the world believes can give satisfaction?

  • How have you experienced the reality of being failed by worldly things?

  • What stands out to you about how the crowd sought after Jesus?

  • In John 6:2, we read that the crowds sought Jesus because He healed the sick. Why did Jesus say the crowds were following Him in John 6:26? What do you think this change in motives says about human nature? What does it say about how we prefer to relate to God?

  • How do you think poor, hungry peasants would have felt about Jesus’ instruction in verse 27? Why?

  • Jesus implied in verse 27 that we are to “labor” for eternal food, but that such food is also given us by Jesus. What does laboring for a gift look like? Can you think of any modern- day metaphors or examples that help us understand this tension?

  • What does it signify that God the Father “set His seal of approval” on Jesus (v. 27)?

  • What are the various possible answers to the people’s question in verse 28? What works does God require? What passages of Scripture could you reference to support your answer?

  • Read James 2:14-26. What is the relationship between faith and works?

  • How does reflecting on God’s power and provision in our past help us with faith for the future? Have you experienced this in your own life? If so, how?

  • In verses 31-32, the people revealed their doubt that Jesus is any better than Moses, and Jesus sought to correct them. In what ways is Jesus better than Moses?

  • How did Moses’ life point us to Jesus?

  • What is the connection between having all of your earthly needs met and your appetite for spiritual needs? In this way, how do our physical needs point us to our need for more?

APPLICATION

  • Have you come to the point in your life where you recognize your true need for Jesus? If so, how did God humble you to get to that point? If not, how might He be speaking to you about that today?

  • Pastor Bobby said that Jesus is not to be the side dish of our lives, but the main course. What are some ways you might have knowingly or unknowingly made Jesus the “side dish” of your life?

  • What current ministry opportunities are available at LCCC that might give you the opportunity to share with others their true spiritual needs and how Jesus alone truly satisfies?
