Christmas Gifts

God’s gift to you in Jesus Christ is unsolicited, unlimited, unspeakable, unchanging, undeserved, and unclaimed.

KEY VERSES

John 3:16 (NASB)

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.

Hebrews 13:8 (NASB)

8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.

2 Corinthians 9:15 (KJV)

15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. (KJV)

UNDERSTANDING

  • If money was no object and you could give someone a really great gift, what would it be? Who would you give it to?

  • If money was no object and you could receive a really great gift, what would you want it to be?

  • What words from this passage help you understand the manner of God’s love for you?

  • In your own words, why did God the Father send Jesus?

  • How does John 3:16 emphasize Jesus’ work on the cross, and not our own efforts to be right with God?

  • How would you answer someone who says, “I’m a good person. Of course, God will give me the gift of eternal life in heaven with Jesus”?

  • When you think of God’s love being unlimited, where do your thoughts first turn: the depth of His love for you or the width of His love for all humanity? What happens when we focus on one of those aspects of God’s gift of Jesus at the neglect of the other?

  • Without belief in Jesus, what is the status of everyone on earth? Why? With this in mind, why does the gift of Jesus to all people go unclaimed by many?

  • How does God’s love for you transform the way you see other people?

  • Read 1 John 4:10. Why is it important that we find the definition of love in the cross rather than somewhere else, especially at this time of year?

  • Why isn’t it enough to merely know that God loves us? Why must we consider the manner in which God demonstrates His love for us through the sacrifice of His Son?

  • What is a gift you wanted at one time that you don’t have any use for anymore? In this sense, how is God’s gift to you different than earthly gifts?

  • How has your understanding of God’s gift to you in Jesus changed over time?

  • Why is it that in relationship to God, we must change but He will never change?

  • What do you think Paul meant here when he described God’s gift as “unspeakable”?

  • If God’s gift to us of salvation in Jesus Christ is unspeakable or indescribable (NASB), does that let us off the hook for telling people about that gift? Explain.

  • Paul gave thanks to God for the gift of Jesus. What are some ways you give thanks to God for the unspeakable gift of Jesus?

APPLICATION

  • We learned this week that the gift of Jesus is unsolicited, unlimited, undeserved, unchanging, unspeakable, and unclaimed. Which of these truths stands out to you the most personally? Why?

  • Have you received this greatest Gift ever? If so, when did you receive it? If not, what holds you back?

  • Is it difficult for you to share this Gift you have received with other people? If so, why? If not, how did you get to the place where it became natural for you to tell people about the greatest gift God has given the world in Jesus?

  • In light of today’s lesson, how can this group pray for you this week?
