Change The Way We Change (Church At Home)

Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey.

KEY VERSES

Corinthians 4:16 (NASB)

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our inner person is being renewed day by day.

Psalm 46:10 (NASB)

10 Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth.

UNDERSTANDING

  • What changes are you hoping for in 2021?

  • In your experience, what kind of changes come to you and what kind of changes come because of you?

  • Considering that New Year’s resolutions are notorious for being broken, why do you think so many people continue to make them each year?

  • When you come to the end of this year, what is one thing you hope will have been true of you? Why?

  • When has there been a time in the recent past where you were tempted to lose heart? How did you turn to God to sustain you?

  • What does it mean to you, personally, that your “inner person is being renewed day by day”?

  • If it’s true that our inner person is being renewed each day, then why do we so often feel the opposite?

  • How can a person know if he or she is treating spiritual growth like a job instead of a journey? Has this ever been true for you?

  • Why did the psalmist say “stop striving and know that I am God”? What is the relationship between “be still” (NIV), “stop striving” (NASB), and “stop your fighting” (CSB)? Which one of those translations stands out to you the most in the context of the new year of 2021?

  • Why did God say “I will be exalted among the nations” in this context? What does that have to do with the command to stop striving?

  • What are some signs we’re striving in a way that is spiritually unhealthy?

  • How is this principle important for us today?

  • Practically speaking, how do we put the principle of silence or not striving into practice?

  • What is something you have learned about God this year? How did you learn it?

  • Is it possible to be still and know God if you don’t be still and read His Word? Explain.

  • In the past, what has prevented you from setting aside time to search the Scriptures? How can good pursuits in the new year keep you from the best pursuit, knowing God in His Word?

  • Pastor Bobby said, “Consistent worship develops consistent character.” Name one way your silence and searching of Scripture in the past has led to who you are, what you believe, and how you respond to the circumstances of life today.

  • Name one way you’d like to change in 2021. Do you believe that silence and searching of Scripture are a requirement for that change? Explain.

    APPLICATION

  • In what sense do you need this new year to not only be a turning point on your calendar but also in your heart?

  • How can this group encourage you in that?

  • How should that impact the way you interact with those outside the church?

  • What is one way you need to change the way you change in the days ahead?
