Christ the Son

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.

KEY VERSES

Matthew 16:13-16 (NASB)

13 Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Luke 1:34-35 (NASB)

But Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the holy Child will be called the Son of God.”

John 3:16 (NASB)

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.

UNDERSTANDING

  • Jesus asked His disciples two questions. What was the difference between the first and second question? What does the fact that Jesus asked this second question indicate about the nature of faith?

  • How was Peter able to recognize Jesus’s true identity?

  • How can knowing Jesus is the Son of God affect how you live your life?

  • If someone asked you what it means to call Jesus “the Christ,” what would you say? What implications for someone’s life does claiming that Jesus is the Christ have?

  • What did Mary want to know? What additional information did the angel give her?

  • Based on the angel’s message, what can believers today understand about Jesus’s identity

  • What is the difference between asking God questions and questioning God?

  • What motivated God to send Jesus into the world? Why did God’s love lead Him to give His Son?

  • Why isn’t it enough to merely know that God loves us? Why must we consider the manner in which God demonstrated His love for us through the gift of His Son?

  • How does John 3:16 emphasize Jesus’s work on the cross, and not our own futile efforts, to be right with God?

APPLICATION

  • This week’s message ended with the question Jesus asked: “Who do you say I am?” How do you answer that question? Who do you need to tell?

  • Is there an area of your life where you claim Jesus as Savior but do not submit to Him as Lord? How can this group help you in that?

  • What would it look like for you to rest in the accomplished work of Christ this week?
