I Am Thirsty

Jesus was here fulfilling the Messianic prophecy from Psalm 69:21: “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.” By saying He was thirsty, He prompted the Roman guards to give Him vinegar, which was customary at a crucifixion, thereby fulfilling the prophecy.

Psalm 69:21 (NASB)

21 They also gave me gall for my food
And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

John 19:28-29 (NASB)

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, *said, “I am thirsty.”29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

Discussion:

  1. What is your reaction to Jesus being thirsty on the Cross?

  2. Why was it important for Jesus to fulfill the scriptures?

  3. Why is it important that we see Christ's physical suffering throughout His crucifixion?

  4. What difference would it make if Jesus was only a divine being who didn't feel the physical suffering?

  5. What difference would it make if Jesus were only a human person being martyred on the cross?

  6. What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ is 100% human and 100% God?

  7. What does it mean to you that Jesus died after suffering on the cross?

  8. If Jesus wasn't 100% man could He have been the way for your salvation from death? Why?

  9. If Jesus wasn't 100% God could He have been the way for your salvation? Why?

Prayer:

  • Pray for one another in your family and any request you may know of.
