I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

It is important that we feel the weight of the exclusivity of Christ, especially in regard to our own salvation and the mandate to preach the gospel.

KEY VERSES

John 14:1-5 (NASB)

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.2In My Father’s house are many rooms; if that were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you.3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you also will be.4And you know the way where I am going.”5Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how do we know the way?

John 9:1-12 (NASB)

1 As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” 6 When He had said this, He spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and washed, and came back seeing. 8 So the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one who used to sit and beg?” 9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” The man himself kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”

UNDERSTANDING

  • Look back at John 13. What reasons might the disciples have had to be troubled? What fears do you have in life right now?

  • What was Jesus’ answer to those fears (v. 1)?

  • What other reason did Jesus give to not fear in verse 2? Verse 3? Verse 4?

  • What do you find most comforting in these verses? Why?

  • How does the perspective Jesus gave in verses 1-4 encourage and challenge you in your current circumstance?

  • What was Thomas really asking in verse 5? What did he want Jesus to tell him?

APPLICATION

  • How have you tried to get to God apart from Jesus? How does today’s passage speak to you about that?

  • What fears do you have in life right now? How does the perspective Jesus gave in verses1-4 encourage and challenge you in your current circumstance?

  • What situation in your life needs to be informed by God’s promise of the future? How can you pursue that?
