Peace Has A Name

Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

KEY VERSES

Isaiah 9:6 (NASB)

6 For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:1-2 (NASB)

1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.

UNDERSTANDING

  • Do you know why you were given the name you were given? If so, explain. Is the meaning of your name a good fit for the person you are?

  • Have you ever spent significant time naming a child or a pet? What struggle was there for you in that process?

  • What are some names for Jesus in the Bible that stand out to you? Explain.

  • Are there any names of Jesus you’ve heard that you’re unsure about because they don’t seem to line up with what you’ve experienced? Explain.

  • Which of the titles given for the Messiah in verse 6 is the most meaningful to you at this time in your life, and why?

  • What do the implications of these titles mean for the mission of our church?

  • What do you think of when you hear the word peace?

  • Why do you think the title “Prince of Peace” was given for the promised Messiah? How did Jesus usher in peace for Israel and peace for us?

  • How do you think the kind of peace Jesus inaugurated confounded the Israelites’ expectations?

  • These verses in Isaiah are more than just the promise of the Child whose birth we celebrate at Christmas. How do these descriptions encourage and comfort us today?

  • Read Ephesians 2:8. How is Jesus Himself our peace?

  • How does His being our peace affect our relationship with God?

  • What is the primary activity of the Messiah? When will that activity be ultimately completed?

  • What is the purpose of Jesus’ reign in your life?

  • What does the promised truth of God’s ultimate victory mean to you personally?

APPLICATION

  • In this week’s message, we learned that as Wonderful Counselor, Jesus speaks to us. As Mighty God, He stands for us. As Eternal Father He sits near us. As Prince of Peace He satisfies us within. Which of these statements do you most need to hold onto this week? Explain.

  • Where do you most need to experience the peace of Christ in your own life? In what ways is it difficult to trust God and therefore experience His peace in this season? What might you need to surrender to lean into His peace?

  • How do you need to pursue peace with those around you? How is God calling you to be a peacemaker or a representative of His peace?

  • How might living as one who experiences God’s peace in the world give opportunity to share the gospel with others?
