Rhythms of Soul

For the health of your emotional life, God wants you to reflect and take responsibility, rest, and make relationships a priority.

KEY VERSES

Luke 10:38-42 (NASB)

38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

UNDERSTANDING

  • Compare and contrast the two sisters in this story. What stands out to you about each?

  • Which sister do you resonate with more, and why?

  • Do you think Martha was justified in her attitude? Why or why not?

  • Why was it so difficult for Martha to stop and listen to Jesus? How are we like Martha today

  • Why was Mary so focused on listening to Jesus?

  • What was Jesus’ reaction to Mary’s listening to Him?

  • What do you think Jesus meant by His words in verse 42?

  • Had you been in the same situation as Mary and Martha that day, which of the two sisters would you have likely emulated? Why?

  • What different forms of busyness take over in your life? How do they hinder your opportunity to reflect, rest, and focus on your relationship with God?

APPLICATION

  • In this week’s message, we looked at three rhythms of the soul—reflection and responsibility, rest, and relationships. Which of the three stands out to you the most personally as an area you need to give greater attention to this week? Why?

  • Would you say that you pay close attention to what is happening within you so that
you can bring it to Jesus? Or are you usually too busy to notice until you’ve reached the point of exasperation, like Martha? What are some steps you can take to reflect and take personal responsibility for your emotional health?

  • Read Psalm 62:1 and 46:10. What are some practical steps you can take to be still and truly find rest for your soul in God?

  • At first glance, it might seem that Martha’s problem was caused by her relationship with her sister. However, we learned in this week’s message that it is our relationships that matter most—our relationship with Jesus and our relationships with others who belong to Him. If its true that “you can’t get Christianity right and get relationships wrong,” what do you need to do to find a healthy rhythm for your soul?
