We Eatin’

Your soul is craving substance, but outside of Jesus, it’s only getting appetizers that don’t satisfy.

KEY VERSES

Matthew 6:11 (NASB)

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

Exodus 16:10-21 (NASB)

10 And it came about, as Aaron spoke to the entire congregation of the sons of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’” 13 So it came about at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the layer of dew evaporated, behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. 15 When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone gather as much as he will eat; you shall take an omer apiece according to the number of people each of you has in his tent.’” 17 The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. 18 When they measured it by the omer, the one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little; everyone gathered as much as he would eat. 19 Moses said to them, “No one is to leave any of it until morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them. 21 They gathered it morning by morning, everyone as much as he would eat; but when the sun became hot, it would melt.

UNDERSTANDING

  • What are some areas of life where you struggle with contentment? Why?

  • In this week’s message, Anthony talked about appetizers that leave him more hungry than when he started. What are some unsatisfying ways people try to fill their needs in life
(i.e. more money, more stuff, more power, more influence, etc.)?

  • What’s wrong with the idea that once you get more of what you want you’ll be satisfied?

  • If you were going to explain Jesus’ instruction to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” to a new believer, what would you say?

  • What do we acknowledge about the character of God when we ask Him to give us our daily bread?

  • Why do you think Jesus taught that this should be a daily request?

  • How does praying like this give proper perspective on both God and ourselves?

  • To receive our daily bread, Jesus says we should simply ask. How has God met your “asks” for His provision in the past?

  • How might writing down your “asks” of God be a benefit to you in your prayer life?

  • What comes to mind when you think about daily bread in your life? Do you see your need for God to provide for you daily?

  • What are some specific ways God has provided for your daily bread in the past?

  • What forms of self-protection or patterns of thinking might make you forget your daily dependence on the Lord?

  • In this week’s message, Anthony pointed out that the bread represents the presence of God, our dependence on God, and the provision of God. Which of these three stand out to you the most in your current need? Explain.

APPLICATION

  • Are you aware of your deep need for everything? Or do you feel confident and self-reliant? How does self-reliance short circuit prayer and a right posture before God?

  • What are some barriers in your life that keep you from having complete dependence on God as your provider?

  • How does remembering what God has done in the past help you pray with confidence about the future?
