What Do the Scriptures Say?

There is nothing you can do to earn salvation, but Jesus died in your place so that you can live with Him eternally in Heaven.

KEY VERSES

Luke 10:26-29 (NASB)

26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

UNDERSTANDING

  • What is the essence of these two commands? What is required to inherit eternal life?

  • What has your experience been in seeking to follow these commands fully?

  • Why would Jesus point the lawyer to this requirement if it were impossible to keep? How does this apply to your life today?

  • Did the lawyer understand the answer that Jesus gave? How do you know?

  • What is the purpose of the law if it is impossible to keep?

APPLICATION

  • In this week’s message, we learned that when you ask Jesus a question, you’d better be careful, make it a good one, and prepare for a question or two in return. Does this reflect your own approach toward God and examination of the Scriptures? How do these three points challenge you personally?

  • How much influence does God’s Word have over your life? What steps can you take to increase that influence? Why is it impossible to live obediently before God apart from regularly reading His Word?

  • Why do we come to faith in Christ for eternal life by grace, but then sometimes begin to live like we have to keep earning it? In what ways are you tempted to live this way?

  • Who do you need to share the love of Christ with this week? How is sharing the truth about our sin and need for grace ultimately loving to others?
